sqrt(x) is an expression, to actually find a value you need to make an equation which states that two expressions are equal in value. There are other ways of writing it though: x^0.5 log base y(x) = 2 where y is the square root of x. 10^(1/2 log(x)) x could be anything, so the square root of x could be any positive number, unless x is complex. For all we know, sqrt(x) could be: -0.5! Which would make x = Pi
