Henna is a plant that grows in hot arid regions. The leaves of the plant can be crushed and mixed with acidic liquid to produce a reddish-brown dye that bonds with keratin in the skin, hair, and nails. The word henna can mean the plant, the powdered leaf, the paste, and the designs and stains themselves. It's one of the world's oldest cosmetics, and probably the oldest one that's still in use. Henna dyes your hair red and makes it amazingly shiny. Henna paste is applied to skin, left on several hours, and removed to reveal orange designs, that darken and deepen over a few days.
