If one were swallowed by a whale, could he cut his way out of the whale's stomach and escape?

It is supposing that first of all, you are actually swallowed by a whale (which is probably not going to happen: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/010914.html ) Secondly, it would depend on if you were capable of breathing in the stomach long enough to have the time to cut the way through. Thirdly, you would have to be carrying a very large, very sharp knife with you. So the answer is no, but mostly because those three scenarios have a pretty much zero chance of ever happening.

James Bartley, from Britain in the late 1800s, who claimed that he was working on a whale ship, fell overboard and was swallowed by a whale. The following day, he said, he was cut from the whale’s stomach, after it had been killed by another whaleboat. Bartley even went of a tour (sort of like the 1800s talk show circuit) and told his story to people. The trouble is that although Bartley looked rather strange (he was said to have been bleached white and lost all of his hair from being inside the whale), there was no proof that his story ever really happened. Even the Captain of the ship he was supposed to be on, did not remember the event, or make a note of it in the ships log. Historians doubt that this really happened at all.

The bartley story is full of holes and was suspected as a fake i myself believe that a scuba diver with a cutting implement could escape the belly of a whale

Maybe you could survive with a big knife if your went in feet first and were somewhere near his blowhole, if possible.

haha... serious question? anyway, i highly doubt it! it would take something special to do such a thing... maybe thats one for harry houdini haha! once you are swallowed by a whale, you suffocate from loss of oxygen. hope my answer was somewhat helpful!

If you had a rather sharp knife maybe you could. If not, in time you will be expelled from the whales anus. :-)

I don't think there is enough oxygen in his stomach to even give you time to get yourself together and cut your way out of there.

Unless you are wearing a diver's suit and an oxygen tank, that you are not chomped on depending if the whale has teeth or baleen and that the movement and acid in the stomach does not affect (which is impossible) I do not believe that anyone could cut their way out of a whale's stomach.

A toothed whale would rip you to pieces before swallowing you. In a baleen whale, you would never make it past the strainers to the stomach. The question is irrelevant in either case. +4

Yes i hav done it a few times. Using a knife and another time didnt hav anything so had 2 eat my way out. Didnt like the raw meat though

You don't have to cut your way out. Just tickle his throat and the whale will sneeze you out. Then you have a 25 mile swim to the nearest island.
