  • I would think the percentage is not as high as we might think. At a guess I say 20%. I don't feel it is a lost art but rather a rebel reaction. many younger folks will spell words wrong on purpose. I guess a way of trying to be different.
  • Yes, spelling is a lost art. The unfortunate thing about the inability of the hoi polloi to spell is that they have lost the ability to communicate with the preciseness that this language affords. By knowing how to spell broad vocabulary and how to correctly manipulate punctuation we can be more precise and more accurate with English than with any other language on the planet. They have forfeited that ability and end up creating strings of gibberish that are sometimes possible to interpret – and sometimes not. More and more the questions on AB are difficult to decipher because the spelling an punctuation are painfully lacking.
  • Definitely a pet peeve of mine too, along with horrendous grammar and text speak. If I think it's someone who speaks English as a second language or is just a poor typist, I tend to overlook it. Otherwise, I do have to plead guilty to throwing the occasional dig in there- at the grave risk of being labeled one of those grammar police;)
  • Probably about 100% of mine. I can't type to save my life.
  • My own problem isn't with spelling. I can spell, I just don't always type very well. I'd say at least a good 25-30% (maybe more?) are either too lazy, or don't care. My other pet peeve is the annoying "text speak" (wut R U going 2 do?) Again, are they just too lazy, or can they just not spell? Perhaps because my grandmother was a teacher/principal, and my dad was "Conan the Grammarian" that those really bother me. I don't usually say anything here, because those people tend to "go off" on anyone who tries to correct them.
  • I'm just waiting for someone to tell you that you spelled 'misspelled' wrong :D
