The carat or karat if you prefer, is an Imperial measure, just like feet, inches, rods, yards, cups, gallons and even ounces. Therefore the 24 is a traditional measurement, before decimalization and the metric system. Two theories are that it comes from the weight of the carob seed or the equivalent of the Roman Siliqua, which was a twenty-fourth of a golden solidus of Constantine I of Rome.
