Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BC-212 BC) was a Greek scientist mostly known as a mathematician and a physicist. He was said to be the greatest mathematician of his time. He was most noted for his work in geometry and calculus, 2,000 years before Newton and Leibniz. He was also known as an engineer, an astronomer, and a philosopher. He discovered pi and discovered the law of pulleys and levers. In reference to his work with pulleys and levers, it is said that Archimedes once stated, "Give me a place to stand and I will move the Earth." Many reknowned mathemeticians consider Archimedes to be the greatest mathemetician of all time.
