I'd go with sthe generic clothing. I cannot justify paying $300 for an item of clothing when there are better things to do with that money. But I don't shop at Wal-mart either (unless the stuff item is really nice). I'm an Old Navy or Gap or H&M person.

I have a pretty healthy mix in my wardrobe. I love designer items and have a good number of them, like Rock & Republic, Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Prada. But I also recognize good, quality craftsmanship and design in name brand clothing as well, like Banana Republic, Puma, Levi's, Steve Madden. I even have a some discount lines in there, like Greatland (Target), and I like to hit thrift stores for vintage and retro. I shop mostly for style, but we all have to have comfort clothes, too. I don't think that you HAVE to wear designer to be stylish. There are even some designer looks that I wouldn't pay 1 cent for, like Uggs. Ugh! I hate them. ;D But, honestly, name recognition is sometimes something that I look for specifically. But like I just said above, I won't wear it if it's a style I don't like, even if it IS da bomb right now.

Yes. Once you find a few designers who cut right for your particular body type, it's very hard to find that same quality of cut in a generic. For example, a Jones New York plain black crew new T-shirt has short sleeves that follow the line of the arm and don't float out like wings or horizontally at the fattest part of the arm which makes the arm look fatter than it is. The length of shirt is more flattering too. I won't clean the bathroom in designer clothes though - I wear Hanes T shirts and sweats because if I'm going to get bleach on something, I don't want it to be a t-shirt I paid $50. for.
