  • The problem with 'independent' candidates is that they siphon support from one or the other of the two main parties, thereby increasing the influence of the party *LEAST* aligned with that candidate's positions. It is a fair question as to whether Bill Clinton would have won the 1992 presidential election if Ross Perot had not taken many votes away from Bush 41. Similarly, it's almost a lead-pipe cinch that Gore would have won in 2000 if Nader had not received votes that might have otherwise gone to the Democratic nominee. The problem is that our Founding Fathers did the best they could with the concepts available at the time. Had they founded the United States 50 or 100 years later, we might very well have a more parlimentary proportional-representation type of government, rather than a winner-take-all system.
