There are three factors that control the growth of wind generated wave, wind speed, wind duration, and fetch. Obviously, the faster the wind is blowing the more energy it has to impart to the ocean. So, high winds can potentially grow bigger waves. The greater the duration of the wind the longer it has to impart energy to the wave. Fetch is the distance over which the wind blows. The further the wind blows the longer each individual wave is under its influence and, therefore, the more energy it can absorb from the wind.
