  • Do yu have any ornaments or logs etc in the tank?
  • Has Prince been in your house recently?
  • purple algae... it is a sign of a healthy tank... Good job
  • If you have live rock and the purple algae is hard it is called coralline algae and will grow everywhere. It is natural and is part of the way natural reefs are formed if it bothers you just scrape it off with a razor blade. If the purple algae is a slimy stringy kind then it is red slime algae and is a sign of to many nutrients in your tank and you will need to address the problem by reducing your fish load, feeding less or getting better filters and increasing your maintenance schedule. Let me know what if it is the slimy type of algae and i can help you out alot more
  • Its because you need to lower your phosphates and limit the hours you lights are on.
  • there are two kinds of purple you could be talking about. One is cyano bacteria and is an algae. In new tanks it makes a appearance early on and should go away in a few weeks. If it sticks around longer it could be a sign of high nitrates or phosphates or even overstocking. If you have live rock the purple could be coralline algae spreading. Is the algae hard or slimy, if it is slimy it is cyano. If it is hard it is coralline. You can scrape it off with an old credit card. If it is cyano just remove it by hand and make sure you keep you filters clean. A good protein skimmer will help as well Your tap water could be the source of the problem as well. Alot of tap water is high in phosphates and nitrates. So i would recommend grabbing a test kit and test your tap water. If it is high in these compounds you should get a RO unit for your water. you can learn more about new saltwater tanks from this guide http://www.saltwatermethods.com or the blog http://www.saltwatermethods.com/blog
