I think it depends on several things, including what time of day it is, where they are, what they're doing and what the text is about. If it's non urgent, then I'd say 24 hours, if it's night time, then obviously, you should be prepared to wait until daytime for them to text you back. If they're busy, or at work, you should be prepared to wait until they're not busy, and have had time to relax or whatever.

I agree that it depends upon which time of day it is, also. However, I am quite young yet (20) and find that most other people my age, and even my family members will reply within 8 hours, if not sooner. However, it also depends upon the urgency of the message. Another factor to consider is the time their network takes to send and receive messages. When I was with Sprint, it took up to 20 minutes to receive a message (which lead to some serious miscommunications!).

And you also want to consider that if you text someone that doesn't want to talk (text) to you, they may not answer you at all. Kind of like leaving a message on their answering machine - they may ignore you.

24 hours if the matter was not urgent

I have received messages hours or days after they were 'sent'. So there might be tech. issues and your message may have never been received at all. Perhaps resend and say "I wasn't sure if you received". I would say that if you want a prompt reply or there is a reason to give a message a deadline, then just state - "Could you please let me know by....." I don't think we can put a standard on text replies. It depends on so many things.... schedule, time, networks...etc.

About 30 seconds-10 minutes. Because they may have misplaced thier cell phone. Or are at a place where they cannot use it. If it is any longer then don't panic, the probably have a good reason behind it.
