students should only respect teachers if they respect them, because if they don't, they will grow up to respect people without being respected back.

Parents should teach their children to respect teachers. They are in a position of athority, so kids don't like that. You may hate the teacher, but you must respect the position and act accordingly. That's how my kids were taught. You don't get to "like" everything in life. You must act respectfully in order to be respected.

Because teachers know more than students, or they wouldn't be there. Because teachers are giving of their time and energy way above what they are paid to do, in order to help you get ahead in life. I know that a few states, New York and Michigan in particular, actually pay teachers like the professionals they are. Some states don't pay teachers as well as farm laborers. Because in most of the world and through most of history, the opportunity to get an education is not available to all or even most kids and you are lucky enough to have that opportunity. And mostly, because not showing respect reflects badly on you, not on the teacher.

Why, they should not, tell me.

You should respect anyone that wants to teach you something. Wisdom can be priceless.
-
I don't think students should necessarily take on an attitude of respect, they just avoid disrespect. They should have an attitude of being there to learn something, and not disrupting class. Respect by default, not by conscious choice.
-
I believe respect has to be earned not demanded!

There are different types of respect. One type is admiration for someone who has accomplished something. The other is simple obedience and regard for rules. In the latter respect students should respect their teachers. Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account.....
-
Well, you probably shouldn't respect your teacher. They clearly aren't teaching you if you are spelling it "there" instead of "their." Or more likely....if you were being respectful to your teacher and paying attention in class, you probably would have learned proper usage.
-
What ever became of simple respect for your elders, after all, they've been there and done it all!
-
Anyone who is there to impart knowledge to you should always be respected. The respect should be freely given, if it's a good teacher then it is justified. If it's a crappy teacher(a crappy teacher is when the majority of students can see that and proved thru the teacher's actions that they are crappy, not when it's only a couple of students who are fails,)then the respect should be withdrawn and other options should be looked into. alike changing class or class protest or complaints to their superior.

Because teachers are an authority figure and students should be taught to respect authority figures. Good teachers respect their students and in turn students respect their teachers...and in turn, teachers respect their students. It's a cycle. Typically, it is the student that disrespects the teacher and the cycle is broken. This is one of the biggest problems facing teachers and society as a whole. Too many people are selfish and have no respect for others. What ever happened to family values? Sorry, but there are too many "punks" out there who have no clue how to function like normal human beings in a civil society. So when the day comes that ALL children are taught that teachers are to be respected, maybe our classrooms will finally become a place where our future generation will learn how to funtion and become productive citizens and contribute to society, rather than be a menace to society.
