Yes, you can. Coins go behind the inner flap (see picture), which actually reads "Insert Coins Into This Pocket" with an arrow on the envelopes that my bank uses. If your bank's envelopes do not have an inner flap, you probably would not want to put coins in them. With just one flap, it would be too easy for them to fall out.

Well, for my bank, the envelopes say "no coins". So I would say that it depends upon the individual bank.

It definately matters what bank you use. Most, if not all, in my area ask that no change be deposited in the envelopes. The problem is with the machines and how alot of change can cause the envelope to get stuck in the machine.
