There isn't one American accent, there are regional American accents, among them New England and the South.

That's a common phenomenon with languages. Geographical separation (America from Britain) leads to a drift of the language. Words and pronunciation change, some people start it and then it gets repeated. The many immigrants (Germans, Irish etc.) also brought their own accents, and this influenced the American English. That's the way most languages originated from a root-language. In Europe, this original language was Latin, and out of this, all the Roman languages (French, Spanish, Italian and others) originated. German and English belong to the Germanic languages.
