Is there anything wrong with remarking on how big someone's house is?

Nope, as long as you are tasteful and don't appear jealous. Maybe using "big" is the wrong word. Try saying, "What a spacious house you have!" or something.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the remark itself. All I can think of is that they interpret your observation as an admonition about flaunting their wealth. Also, how can someone respond? Only by saying "yes it is" or "no it isn't." I guess you can try a rephrase like "you must love the roominess of this house". But it sounds like someone is being too sensitive if they can't take the remark as just an observation.
