1978 MGB tied with 1968 Oldsmobile 442 (We got that up to 450HP by replacing the 4bbl carb and stripping weight off [air conditioner, etc.], replacing intakes and swapping the transmission. My friend had 24" wide racing tires and the thing was ridiculous) Diametrically opposed perhaps.

My favorite is the one one I now own,a1989 NISSAN S-cargo imported from Japan.Pictures of this car are under images,Google or yahoo. It has made me very popular for it is so funny in shape and so rare(only 12,000 made)It has a steering wheel on the right hand side like in England and when I stop at llights people look at it strangly.I have been chased down by cars many times so they can look at the car.It has been in a collectors car show and got as much attention as old collector cars,It looks like the old Citrons, like the one from "American Grafitti",except with the back end cut off.It is called a retro car because it looks like it is from the 60's.I figure why not have a car that puts smiles on peoples faces.A picture of it is on another answer for this question, for I could not add it to this one.

A 1989 Nissan S-cargo imported from Japan.Pictures of this odd car can be seen on Google or yahoo images. It is a retro car, right hand drive, for in Japan they drive on the opposite side of the road.It looks like an old Citreon with the back cut off.I have had people chase me for blocks and stop me so they can look at it.It has been in a collectors car show as well.I get a lot of smiles from other drivers because it almost looks like a toy.It is my answer to the "smart car".The picture of the car is further down the list, because I could not add it to this answer,so it is a duplicate answer.

Audi TT 2005 Coupe, 3.2LV6. 225HP, Curb weight 3260; AWD, sleek, handles like butter and fast as a ghost; luxury all around yet around 20mpg with a 16.5 gallon tank, about the same as a well equipped Mercedes. I drive a 97 saturn SL1 that gets 40-46mpg however (Wednesday car?).. 100HP Toyota 1.9L SOHC, and I won't part with that thing until it explodes.

Among major world automakers, my current favorite is Mazda. I think Mazda does the best job of combining quality, reliability, fuel economy and *driving fun* into an affordable package. The Miata (or MX-5 as it is now called) was a brilliant expression of automotive soul, and that soul seems to be a part of everything Mazda makes. I must also give high marks to Honda for overall engineering brilliance and Toyota for its ability to manufacture vehicles more efficiently than any other maker. And a special merit badge to Toyota for making the world's most bomb-proof car, the Toyota pickup truck. . (Note: video has curse words that might offend British/Aussie/Kiwi viewers) . .
