Essencially it all comes down to the mental construct in your head where you have the concept of seperateness. This is a core issue with Buddhists. According to to unified field theory, all matter and energy are disturbances in the fabric of time-space. It is up to you do decide whether you want to think of this as reality or whether you want to see it as a fancy way of simplying physics equations. Unified field theory represents a broader human need for consistancy. Inconsistancy in the human brain causes fear, basically, as differing conceptualization compete for control. At a macroscopic level, connectedness is best addressed with spirituality, not science.

As Lain said, "We are all connected." Although Lain's thoery is different, if you look at things in the sense of atoms and electrons, you will find that indeed everything is connected in some sense. Electrons are constantly passing onto other atoms, molecules, organisms. With that in mind, parts of us are always being exchanged, taken away, or added for to and by other entities.
