  • If they previously used it on someone that had a drug problem or cancer, then they use the same tools to cut open the next person... all those cells and germs will contaminate the new person. They can't have that if they are determining cause of death...
  • Probably just in the name of following standard surgical procedure. However, I suppose there is a reason for performing autopsies sterile. I mean, when someone is wheeled into the morgue, there's almost always a chance that some sort of biological evidence could be left in their body, which could be destroyed by contaminating the corpse during autopsy.
  • When a body is required to be autopsied, the person doing the autopsy has to list the cause of death on the Certificate of Death. Instrument sterilization is necessary to prevent cross-contamination AND to complete an accurate Certificate of Death. The Certificate of Death may or may not be "the straw which break's the camel's back" as to whether or not an insurance company or other interested party will pay the insurance or death claim to the autopsied person's estate or heirs.
