It depends on the labor laws in your state. At 17 you are still a minor and unless there are extenuating circumstances you would have to follow the labor laws. I'm not sure what they are so you would have to refer to them. You could always try retail, it's generally not difficult to get a job in retail.

Retails good because if it's a store you shop from, you get discounts on the clothing and objects. You know that as a teen you buy clothes and other things, and since you don't make much money, that discount will help. If you're personable, funny, or good looking and poeple don't hate who are, maybe serving as a waiter is good for you... cause you can make really good tip money on a constant basis if you're either of the three. And if you're lucky, maybe you can land a job in a office as a student, or student helper (looks awesome on your resume), so just drop many resumes here and there. Hope this helps!

Fast Food or Retail. I worked Fast Food for a year and a half, and although it sucked, it gave me a year and half's worth experience of dealing with customers and with co-workers, and after I quit that job I got a job as a Graphic Artist because I could honestly talk about why I hated the fast food job. The company appreciated my honesty and pretty much hired me on the spot.
