Can an insane person truly KNOW they're insane? Or is the knowledge of insanity counteractive to said condition?

People who have schizophrenia can be aware that they are mentally ill.

If that is the case, then the cure for insanity would be to make the nutbag realise that they are, indeed, insane. Having done so renders them unable to be insane, meaning that they've no choice be to be sane. Once they are, there would be nothing to stop them from becoming insane again, since they would think that they were sane so you'd need to tell them again and again, each time. To save effort, perhaps you could just staple a sign to their head saying "Hey buddy, you're nuts!".

a person who in a state of psychosis can undoubtedly know that they're psychotic. for example, a prolonged questioning of whether or not one is insane can induce psychosis. once they become psychotic they may find themselves in a paradoxical loop, as when asking "what would a psychotic person ask themselves?" they are answering their question and prolonging the psychotic episode.
