I want to be a graphic designer too! I looked it up on a program thing at school called Career Cruiser about 2 years ago. Lucky I saved it on my computer. Large cities tend to offer more job opportunities for graphic designers. Freelancers must be able to attract a regular flow of clients on their own, so their income can vary a great deal as well. Established freelancers with strong reputations will earn more than freelancers just starting their careers. Income for freelance graphic designers can range between $20,000 and $150,000 a year. I am a designer of 14 years and had my own business. I have been offered salary from $24,000 to $36,000. besides experience and creativity, it really depends on where you live. If you are in an area where there are a lot of universities, colleges, and or design schools the market is going to be flooded with designers and the salary will reflect it.(supply & demand)

I live in portland oregon, and i have a small graphic design company. I think that freelance / small companies is really the way to go, because for the projects that i do, i can bring in anywhere from a 600 dollars for a small project that will take me two days, to projects that i will continue to work on and continue to update, that i can get paid anywhere from 65-100 dollars an hour of work, depending on how much i do and what exactly i am aske to do.

Knew folks who were graphics designers for a *very* large chain coffee company (yes, that one) and got paid $30k ~ $50k depending on experience.
