That would have been about 1961 when I was 4 and the trip was from CA to OK, my Mom & I rode the train to see my grandparents for a summer vacation, funny thing is the main thing I remember is the bathroom on the train & the dinner car and the sound of the wheels on the track also sticks in my mind to this day.
My first train trip led me to Amsterdam when I was about 12 years old, 30 miles from where I lived. It was so exciting, but I'll never forget my first encounter with the 'ladies of the red light district', I was so shocked. lol
I don't know this as a fact but I would assume into Philadelphia. I live in a surrounding suburb.

If you don't count commuter train trips, it was about a six hour ride through the mountains and flats of New Zealand
1960 ... train from Brandon, Manitoba to Montreal, Quebec ... then onto a ship and across the Atlantic to Zweibruken, Germany.
Winnipeg, MB to Vancouver, B.C.
Michigan to Chicago IL.
From Schenectady, NY to New York City.
Unless you count subways and commuter trains, I've never been on a train trip.
If you only count commuter trains, it was up and down the Rhondda Valley in Wales (from Cardiff in the south to Tonypandy in the north) during a visit last year.
If you include subways, then it was around New York City during a visit in '82.
Knott's Berry Farm ... What? It's the only train I've ever been on!:)
The first one I remember was with my girl scout troup. We went from St. Louis, MO to Springfield, IL.

As a baby from Lowell, Oregon to Chemault, Oregon on a Southern Pacific passenger train so my Dad could see me for the first time as he was woking in a road in 36 called the Diamond Lake Cutoff, straight east west for miles. The one I remember was in 42 to Tennessee at age 5 from Eugene to Nashville, most of it on Union Pacific. Still have a bag of salt from UT, and Kids Menu.
Amtrack trains. Do they offer electrical outlets to charge cell phones and laptops at the seat? Or anywhere on the trains?

Have you ever ridden a super train, one of those really fast trains? Seems to be perfect in Japan.

there's no trains in australia?? Or did you just mean trip as in "a long trip"?
by GreenFreak on August 12th, 2008
well, that was the most exciting one :P i have been on a train before, but it was only to a footy match ;) trains in other countries are always more exciting :)
by Gabstar on August 12th, 2008
I could do with a little less excitement when you have to buy the tickets, find your way to the right place and avoid ending up in the middle of nowhere :/
But once you're going, it's pretty simple ^^
Hm.. so trains aren't that common means of transportation? I take the train each day to school, and there's rarely any space at all :/
by GreenFreak on August 12th, 2008
it's mostly trams here ;)
by Gabstar on August 12th, 2008
hm.. those only work inside the cities, as far as I know, way too slow for longer distances, right? If you have to travel some 40-ish km and you don't want to drive or you simply dont have a car/license, what do you do then?
by GreenFreak on August 13th, 2008
if you're lucky, there might be a bus, and im not sure how far trains go outside the city...and yeh, mostly in the city areas...though i live in the suburbs outside the city, and there aer still trams. not as many though, that's for certain.
by Gabstar on August 14th, 2008
hm.. interesting. Of course, Denmark is much smaller, but here there's always busses or trains to other cities/towns.
it's also interesting that you still use trams.. We stopped having them here in the 60's or 70's I think, but of course those you have down there is much more modern than the last one in Denmark.
So if you want to travel, say, 400km away to another city, you have to drive?
by GreenFreak on August 14th, 2008
oh, so you're saying we're so 60's? :P
yup, you got it ;) drive or fly...:) but, where on earth would you be wanting to go thats 400km away? like, not even ballarat is that far :P or i guess you could go to the great dividing range for skiing, but i can't imagine trains going up the mountains :P
by Gabstar on August 14th, 2008
err.. you know I don't mean miles, right? Well, 400km is a bit long, but when I went to my sister in the holiday, it didn't take much more than about 3 hours. I'm not quite sure it's actually 400km from here to there, though, probably more like 300..
(here's a challenge for you: I went by train, I live in Sorø, she in Århus. How far was it? :P)
by GreenFreak on August 14th, 2008
hahaha:P im on it! :P
by Gabstar on August 14th, 2008
using my excellent geography skills... :S hehe...i came to the conclusion that it was 156km... hmm...im way off!!! :P
by Gabstar on August 14th, 2008
that doesnt sound.. completely unreasonable.. and yet.. isn't that in a straight line?
by GreenFreak on August 15th, 2008
...well, i didn't measure a straight line! but my method was rather...in-accurate :P
