Technically we'll never be "free" until anarchy hits. At that point, we can do whatever we want whenever we want just as the word "free" dictates. Of course, that's inadvisable. So people are given basically given restricted freedom.

Not exactly. In the US, we are free to worship as we please, speak and write as we please, etc. but we still don't have the right to hurt others with our words, our actions, or kill someone. That's a good thing! Throughout the history of humankind we have had numerous, long-lasting eras of complete freedom, and we didn't do very well.
