  • Look in your phone book for an attorney referral service, or stop by your local court house for that contact info. Then ask about enforcing the "warranty of habitability," since most states have one. What will happen is a state agency will likely send someone out to document the condition of your premises and follow up with the landlord with any necessary notices or orders. If your landlord still doesn't comply, report back to that agency. Your landlord will probably be informed that if he/she doesn't address the issue, then you may not have to pay rent for that time.
