  • To avoid injury you should never stretch cold muscles (ligaments, tendons, etc.). Always warm up first. It's best to warm up with light activity (lighter than normal weight or light aerobic activity), then stretch before your 'real' workout and again immediately following your workout. A good rule of thumb is at least one minute of post workout stretching for each five minutes of workout. It never hurts to do more. If lifting weights it's very helpful to stretch each muscle group after you work it (helps prevent lactic acid build up).
