Er, it really depends WHAT movie. But I think generally both are fantastically designed to have advantages and disadvantages, beyond what both those actually are.
A plasma beam is conducted matter through mostly electricity, and so can probably cause a whole lot more damage than the laser, but is often restricted by the lack of components required to activate it. I don't think it's very good for precise targeting either, once again because it needs specific factors to channel it. But then, in sci fi they can probably find a way to make it more convenient. Still, it usually does a hell of a lot of damage when used.
A laser is basically just a burning light, is more precise and has farther range than a plasma beam, but really isn't as strong and certainly won't get you out of all situations. ''Shooting'' laser beams as opposed to extending it works a whole lot better, as proven by Star Wars.
Are car manufacturers inspired by early sci-fi movies? Looks like spaceships with training wheels on the road.
