I've often wondered, if the Olympics are supposed to be for amateur athletes, then why was the decision made to allow professional athletes to compete?

The Olympics were to showcase the best each country had to offer which now includes pro atheletes.

I think maybe to give our professional athletes and those of the other countries a chance to taste some of the glory. Many of them go from high school directly to professional teams because they couldn't afford the time/money it takes to become an Olympic athlete. I think it's wonderful..you have amateurs competing against other amateurs and professionals competing against other professionals..I don't see any losers here..I think everyone wins! :) Playing your sport, representing your country, having the whole world watch...that must be an amazing experience! :)

In basketball, the pros were allowed to compete because the other countries were doing it and the college players would get killed.

Professionals have been allowed to participate since a new ruling by the IOC in 1986 Pro Fencers have been allowed since 1896 the first of the modern Olympics.
