Go to Vermont University and see someone in the Geology or Chemistry department. Ask them what it is. They will know what tests to run. If you're in northern Vermont, Bishop's University is in Sherbrooke, Quebec and they can also check it for you. Bishop's is an English University and it might be closer for you.

Thanks for the answer. I asked this a year ago so some things have been answered. It was tested by the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. They found it is Antigorite. And with its extra hardness and translucency it puts it in the gem or precious catagory. Am now making jewelery items. Such as pendants and earrings, and sets. Just opened a little store thing in etsy. And will be starting my web page thru godaddy. I just got it up and found out that my photos are junk so waiting on equipment so I can take a decent picture of my work. O thats another part of the story. I had to figure out what to do with it, the stone now that I have it. I enjoyed cutting it into cabachons. But getting them mounted was expensive. The standard mountings from the jewelery supplys were, well just that standard. I had to cut the stones to fit the mounting. These stones have beautiful patterns in them and require they be cut in freeform to get there full beauty. Look fot JimWrap. JimWrap
