What exactly happened in the ending after Dave's space pod "landed" in that fancy room?

    I think it was meant to represent how short our lives are. Dave ageing so rapidly in a small room or rooms is symbolic of the human race being stuck in such a minute part of the universe for such short slice of time.

    I think it was meant to represent a "human zoo" looked after my aliens. Dave ages at a fantastic rate for reasons unknown, and then is reborn as a "star baby" before being sent back to Earth. I think it's meant to symbolise the next stage of our evolution

    I agree human zoo, but he may have aged naturally. Then they cut to the death/rebirth/monolith sequence, which was a cheap shot really, but at the time amazing, especially for those who saw it on acid.
