Some people I know have diabetes and I didn't know until they told me. I suspect some people just don't come and and tell everyone about it.

It not neccessarly "common" but it is becoming more abundant in the population along with obesity. "As of 2007, 23.6 million people—7.8% of the population—have diabetes; 1.6 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years or older in 2007." - http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/faq/research.htm#1 7.8 % roughly 8 %... so 1 out of about 12 people you meet will have a strong chance of having diabetes. Each person may or may not like to share that with others so that decreases your chances of knowing. My grandmother and older people in my family have diabetes because of obesity, so I do know alot. And the majority are people in or past their middle ages.
