Gimp works wonders, but for simple things like mere tint adjustments or gamma correction, it's like bringing a 105mm howitzer to a knife fight. For that sort of light work, I use XnView. Google's Picasa has some of that functionality as well, but lacks other features I like so I don't use it anymore.
