  • The most famous historical person, I think, would be Roger Williams. The most famous "famous" people would be the actors James Woods and Debra Messing.
  • somebody famous came from Rhode Isand?
  • Historical person, maybe Gilbert Stuart or Samuel Slater. Hollywood famous: Is original Survivor Richard Hatch still famous? If not, I'd say Cartoonist Seth MacFarlane.
  • How do you define fame? As Napolean said, "Fame is fleeting; obscurity is eternal." Also, how do you define "from" in this sense? Do you count only those born in RI? Do you count those who had homes in RI? George M. Cohen was born in RI but didn't spend much time here. Both Eisenhower and Kennedy had residences in Newport, RI that were known as "the Summer White House." Architect Richard Morris Hunt was from RI, as was horror writer HP Lovecraft. Even Edgar Allen Poe lived here for a time. Summer cottages in Newport were owned by Belmont, Astor, Vanderbilt and countless others. Oliver Hazzard Perry and Matthew Perry both hailed from RI as did Gilbert Stuart and Samuel Slater. Pirate Thomas Tew called Newport home; Captain Kidd retired to Newport and lived here 2 years before his capture in Boston. Seth MacFarlane, the Farrelly brothers, Harry Anderson, David Hartman, Debra Messing, James Woods, Ruth Buzzi, Vin Di Bona, the Cowsills, John Cafferty, Billy Gilman and Joanna Going are all Rhode Islanders. That is just a partial list.
  • Meredith Vieira, co-host of the NBC program "Today" Historical: H.P. Lovecraft was born and raised in Providence. Seth MacFarlane was born and raised on Connecticut, not RI. (He went to RISD) Here's more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_from_Providence,_Rhode_Island
