Everyone is born with different types of muscle fibers. There are fast-twitch, slow-twitch, and intermediate-twitch fibers. Athletes are born, not made. You can change intermediate-twitch fibers to slow-twitch fibers by long distance or endurance activities. There are only a certain number or percentage of fibers that you can change. If you're born with predominantly fast-twitch fibers, it is possible for you to run a marathon with training.. but it is extremely unlikely that you will win or place in the top scores. Intermediate-twitch fibers can sometimes change to fast-twitch with sprinting exercises, but it's not as common. The best thing for you to do is to figure out what kind of fibers you have, slow or fast, and then nurture that activity. I have slow-twitch mostly, so i do endurance and distance exercises.
