Looking for a thoughtful answer on this one. Why do people go into some sort of state of mania when they see a celebrity? What is the psychology behind that?

I think people just like to be around people who are popular. Since celebrities are very popular, people become very excited about meeting them.

I think many young people, and they are the ones most prone to this, idealise certain celebrities because they seem to embody what the "fan" wishes they could be. Their own self-concept may not be too high at the present time. It is sad, in a way, but, such is our society today. I have my "favourite celebs" and admire them for their talents, but I outgrew the "fanatic" stage pretty young. I had many role models in my own family and community and they complimented me and encouraged me in my own meagre talents.

I'm not sure. I've seen and talked to a few celebrities and I just treat them like any normal person. When I become a celebrity, hopefully people will treat me the same :)

I saw Keifer Sutherland once and I just looked at him and he smiled and looked shy.Now the chick he was with was a 'look at me'type and she was the one creating a scene.He tried to be quiet.

People tend to have an obsession with celebrities because that's what they want in their own lives. People are prone to celebrities because they are being prized by the media, and encourages that people should also worship them.

honestly, I think it is because those people have such a low self esteem, or have such a lack of their own personality, that they feel as if they need to live throuh others, and to finally be near that person who's life they feel they "share" sends them into hesteria.

I've met a few celebrities/rock stars, and it was interesting how it changed my outlook. Before then, I always saw them as people who operated on a much higher level then us 'simple folk'. Once I met some of them, I realized that they are no more human nor godlike than anybody else, and I have no trouble maintaining my composure.

Obsessive. Living through them. Seems like an attractive life. And media (and those crazy photo taking people) put so much of the celebrities personal life out there it makes people (usually younger ones) feel as if they know them and doesnt stop people from trying to reach out and touch them (because they feel close to them) but if we saw our favorite CEO or preseident we wouldnt ever freak out like that, reachout for their hand, or any other "fan" behaviour.

I guess celebrities are simply gods and goddesses to those people. Good question.
