I know this question isn't specific to Aoife, but what is the meaning of "Ni" as the middle name of many Irish women?

Just a short follow up to last answer.
"Mac" is the Irish form meaning "Son" but the English version of many Irish names chop the "Mac" to "Mc".
Also "O" is Irish for "from" - hence its use for multi-generation relationships.

Too Much Time On My Hands

It's not really a middle name. "Ni" basically means "daughter of" and precedes the name of a girl's father. Similarly, "Mc" or "Mac" (I can never remember which one is Irish and which one is Scottish!) goes before the name of a boy's father. And "O' " would go before the name of an male ancestor removed by a few generations.
