Some of them are hormone-free...just made out of copper to alter the pH of your uterus, making it a difficult place for conception to occur. Medical professionals usually discourage against younger women having an IUD because of the implications. It really is a long-term solution for people who have already had children and don't want any more, as the resulting infertility can last a while.

If you are looking for something hormone free I'd go with the copper IUD like a PP poster said. I just hear that it is more for women who have already had children (they have to stretch your cervix and women who have had kids usually stay at 1cm after birth thus making it less painful).
