Can a regular Xbox play new Xbox 360 games?

Absolutely not. The Xbox can't handle the graphics, textures and code for Xbox 360 games. When you insert the disc, the Xbox will simply say "Can't determine if this disc is a game or a DVD" or to that effect.

X360 games are coded in such a way to utilise all threads of the processor. Since the Xbox has an obsolete processor, it wouldn't work.
