The small mass of a fly isn't enough to break the surface tension of the water. Try adding a little dish soap to the water; sometimes the fly will fall right in!
A fruit fly landed on my apricot mango yogurt, and I didn't realize it was there until after I put a spoonful in mouth. Perhaps I'll die?
