Are ya thinkin of the New Madrid Fault ? It runs from Cairo, Illinois through New Madrid and Caruthersville, Missouri, down through Blytheville, Arkansas to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It dips into Kentucky near Fulton and into Tennessee near Reelfoot Lake, and extends southeast to Dyersburg, Tennessee. It crosses five state lines, and crosses the Mississippi River in at least three places. It more or less follows the Mississippi River. In December,1811 there were at least three magnitude-8 earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks, damage was recorded as far away as Washington,DC and South Carolina.
The folks in New Madrid did not have to pay for any of the damage even if it was their fault.
