Anyone noticed how Johnathan Frakes (Will Riker) gets the crap beat out of him for the entire first season?

They were trying hard to establish him as the TNG version of Kirk, since the new Captain was so much older. In the first season of TNG, Riker gets lots of action both of the feminine variety, and the fist variety. The writers really struggled with the first season, trying to establish a new show in a familiar universe; with an ensemble cast rather than a core of Kirk, McCoy, and Spock, with the others playing supporting parts.
