  • Some forms of dementia, like Alzheimer's, are thought to have a hereditary component. +2
  • Yes it can be. +2 :)
  • My grandmother has Alzheimer's, My dad and 2 of his siblings show signs of it. I, too, will end up with it.
  • Most mental illnesses are an interplay of genes and environment. Manic Depression, as it was called when I was a kid, or Bipolar, as it is called now, gallops through my stepfather's family. In every generation there are at least a couple of cases. There is a researcher from Miami University that has been studying the old order Amish for thirty years. She has traced the lineages of every current case and traced them all back to one couple of the original thirty-odd founding families in PA. She has isolated 5 genes, any 3 of which will cause the disease and is close to creating a blood test for it. Other diseases are an interplay of genes and environment. Dementia is beginning to be known in some circles as Diabetes type 3. So if you control your diet and insulin levels well, perhaps it may be possible to avoid it. The nun study has also found the number of teeth missing at the beginning of the study to be a good predictor for dementia.
  • +6......GREAT QUESTION!!! There are studies which genetically link many forms of dementia, just like heart disease, diabetes and so on. There are also many variables as well. Diet is currently being studied to see what effect they, too, have on a person with a propensity towards it. The studies are a long way from drawing to a conclusion only because it takes time to gather the annual data. More importantly, there are some people who develop diseases and disorders spontaneously, with no family hx of it anywhere. This fuels scientists to study the variables even further, since this is also and indication that, if it can be turned on, it can also be prevented.
