If Apollo 11 had been a failure resulting in the deaths of the astronauts or an Apollo 13-type scenario, would the entire Moon landing project have been abandoned?

    No, we still have not abandoned space exploration even though we have had several astronauts perish.

    I think it should be remembered just how close to being cancelled the entire program was following the Apollo 1 fire.
    Given the huge financial undertaking of the lunar landing missions, the Vietnam crisis and the fact that the magic of the Moon itself would be ruined by the thought of dead Astronauts lying up there for all eternity; I believe the failure of Apollo 11 resulting in the loss of the crew would have spelled the end of the Apollo missions.

    Apollo 1 was a failure resulting in the deaths of all the astronauts. The Apollo project was not cancelled. Therefore it is unlikely that it would have been cancelled if Apollo 11 failed. Perhaps Apollo 12 would have been first to take men to the moon.
