  • Response from Eric Billingsley, Director of eBay Research Labs: In the labs we do this in three ways. Our researchers spend a third of their time in consulting, going out, finding business partners, so we can evolve the products and evolve the ideas. In the process of doing that we find the core issues. Once we identify the core issues the tech solutions become obvious. That’s the pure research part. Once we have the cause, coming up with the solution. Once we have the solution we go into technology transfer mode and we have business partners that are willing to fund this, we do prototyping, and things that help us sell that idea back to the community and to the business. And this partnership is something you don’t see in a lot of research organizations. You generally think of research as blue sky getting lost in the ideas. When we hire people, we look for people who want to take their projects out of the community. 50% of what we work on makes it on the site.
