Because they might want to major in different things. If they want to study art, they would want to go to a fantastic art school. Same with cooking, teaching, etc. If they are just getting something general, then yeah, they could stay in town. But a lot of people want to get away from home for a while..

Harvard or the College of Western Idaho. I think there might be a difference.

college isnt just abvout academia. its also about learning how to live on your own, pay rent and bills, and make new friends, how to be independant.

Who wants to stay locally to go to college? I'm a perfect example. I just can't wait to turn 18 or so to go to some great college 4 hours away. I mean in 4 hours from here, you go from senior infested living to a ecstatic city. Personally I enjoy socializing and this isnt the place for me. Other reasons is you just feel so independent to live on your own and practically do what you want, a freedom you never have back at home.

some folks want to get away from their hometowns for a while, sometimes even for good. It's when you hit the age when you move out. It's part of growing up.

Well to me 2+2=3 and that other one... the answer to your question is that the better colleges are sometimes further away. I'm lucky, I have one of the best in the country just down the road! :)

Economics is a good reason for many to attend their local college. But, there is much to be said for being away from parents and high school friends when you are serious about your studies and just for the experience of being on your own and meeting new people from different backgrounds. That can be very educational in itself.
