Technically, it has been considered a "Socialist Republic" since 1961. [for anyone who *insists* on sources] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuba The web page also recognizes a "communist party of Cuba" but lists their government specifically as Socialist Republic.

According to Marxist theory, true communism can't exist until the entire world is under Marxist domination and there are no more capitalist influences. Therefore, any country we consider Communist considers itself "state socialist."

I would regard it as Communist in that the state controls most activities and private enterprise is only allowed to occur where the state permits it and only for very small businesses. For example, restaurants may only have few employees (6?). In a socialist country, private enterprise may be highly taxed and strictly regulates, but there is no reason why a successful business cannot expand as much as it wants to.

From Wikipedia as well: "Politics of Cuba takes place within a framework of a socialist republic. Cuba is constitutionally defined as a "socialist state guided by the principles of José Martí, and the political ideas of Marx, Engels and Lenin". The present constitution also ascribes the role of the Communist Party of Cuba to be the "leading force of society and of the state"." I take this to mean that it practices socialism under the guidance of the Communist Party. I doubt that either socialism or communism is practiced according to a definition, so we may be splitting hairs with this question.

According to Marx, Socialism is the pre cursor to Communisim. It happens in stages and Socialism is like the second stage I believe? I dont think that Cuba recognizes itself as communist on a person to person level. That was Che Gueverra and Castros bag. I might be mistaken?

I've got some cohiba's if that will suffice.

AIDS in the time of Che Gueverra? As to be a misquote.
-
It is a dictatorship.

Cuba is really a totalitarian regime, a dictatorship under the guise of Communism but that was only because of its alliegance with the USSR. Things are so bad there that I don't think anybody thinks about politics or the system anymore, just where the next bite of food, meds, clothes or the bear necessities are going to come from next
