Because there are way too many people on the road, and the county destroyed the trolley system several years ago, in favor of building more freeways. It turned out to be a big mistake.

Because 30 years ago a subway system was voted down. L.A. is the only major Town I have lived in that does not have a good mass transit system that you can count on. You can get around fairly easy in a small localized area but travel across the Southern California basin takes forever. Most people live in the outlying areas and prefer to drive, believe it or not it is quicker most of the time. Unless a holiday weekend is coming up then it takes 2 hours to make a 30 min drive.

9-28-2017 One American in eight lives in California, 39,250,000 at the last count. One out of four Californians lives in Los Angeles County. Now you may have heard that the weather is good there, but if you haven't been there you can't know what that means. We have no words for how NICE it feels there. Even when the smog is too thick to see across the street you feel like a king just being there. Besides the dense population, Los Angeles was developed at the same time the nation was falling in love with cars. In California you are not actually a person if you don't own a car. In the rest of the country it is enough to know somebody who owns a car. Even children there can tell you how they got to where they are, every street, how many intersections to count, speed limits, prominent stores at the corners, every detail. And they are not afraid of distance. When I was in the Air Force IO lived almost 50 miles from the base and I hitch hiked every morning. I usually got picked up by one of the civilian employees who lived even farther away than that. Bottom line: California has heavy traffic, Florida has alligators, Texas has bullets flying over from various places, ... every state has something. You get to choose.
