Is their any way to find out (via a good knowledge of electronics) what station a radio is playing whale being in the immediate vicinity of the radio?

There was a CIA guy who took a radio receiver tuned to the Intermediate Frequency of most radios (455 KHz for AM; 10.7 MHz for FM radios of that time), put it in a truck, and drove around the Soviet Embassy, listening to what the Russians inside were tuned to. I think that one of the TV rating companies had a plan to cruise neighborhoods and check on TV settings in the same way. Technology has changed, so have Intermediate Frequencies.
