Points

Here at Answerbag, our members tell us what content they like by awarding Points to the best questions and answers. These points help us (and you!) determine which questions and answers are the most helpful, most interesting, or most appreciated.

Members earn points too!

Not only do questions and answers earn points, but members earn points! When you rate someone's question or answer positively, that item earns points, and the person who submitted that item also earns points. And, the higher your level is, the more points they earn. Earn points quickly by getting good votes from senior members.

Note: Positive votes give points to other members, but negative votes do not deduct points from other members – they only help us rank questions and answers. That keeps everything friendly!

It seems to me that it goes like this:
1-2 beginner
3-4 novice
5-9 contributor
10-14 whiz
15-19 authority
20-29 expert
30-39 professor
40+ brain. I don't know anyone higher than that.

Obviously, the higher the better. The higher number you get, the higher your level will go.

Its a government conspiracy to see how really bored we all are. Maybe a little monkey suit and a trip to the moon.

The points propel you up the "levels" of this board. And there's a good side effect of being a high level AB member: the points you give to or take from other people weigh more and more as you "level up". The -6 points given to you by six stupid trolls could be effectively erased by a high-ranking AB member once he clicks the "helpful" button to your favor.

OK, I still don't get this exactly. When I see a question or answer, I'm seeing the total number of points it's already gotten from other members, right? So I can add more points to that total or I can deduct points from that total? I understand that points are worth more the higher you are on the expertise chain, but what's a typical amount of points someone might give for an answer they find helpful? 5? 25? 100? The same for rating a question. If I'm a beginner (which I am), and I think a question or answer is good, how many points, say, equals an "A" (really excellent answer); how many equals a "B" (good answer), etc.?

The more points you have, the more points you can give.

I had high hopes of that happening on QnA Live. I gave up after a half million points and no check from Microsoft. ;-)

An award from a AB user, for giving a good answer.
The points total up and level you up.

I'm not here mainly to get points but to help people out. The points thing is just disaster when it comes to popularity, cliques, and so on. If you want, you can commit bagacide like Stableboy did and ask Joel to delete all your points once in a while.
