Truman was a determined man whose Administration is respected for two great achievements: (1) bringing World War II to an end (1945), and (2) initiating desegregation of the U.S. military (1948). A question remains: whether the end of the war in the Pacific justified the means: killing about 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki with atomic bombs.
