  • simply pumping it would take a pump far larger than worth the effort.
  • Mercury is a liquid element, and you need to use pure nitrogen to keep mercury hard. For the last 20-30 years they have discovered how toxiced mercury is even in small amounts.
  • I suspect we could, but toxicity would almost certainly be an issue. Liquid sodium was used at Chernobyl if I recall correctly, and that got pretty messy in the '80's. But I think it was considered in outer space applications, like plutonium powered satellites and probes.
